The animals on the Farm at Natirar play an important role in helping us to attain a sustained balance with nature. Through the use of portable fencing, our animals are rotationally grazed on lush pastures while enriching the soil and helping to protect it from disease and pest outbreaks. Allowing these animals to be raised in a stress free humane environment results in exceptionally delicious and healthy products.
Sheep
One of the most harmonizing views at Natirar is the sheep grazing our pastures. Spring is particularly exciting as we welcome our new baby lambs to the flock that immediately join in the graceful grazing. The flock on The Natirar Farm consists of Churro, Navajo, Romney and Cheviot breeds and numbers anywhere between 30 and 40 at any given time.
Pigs
The Farm at Natirar hosts Duroc/Bershire pigs for about nine months of the year. The pigs enjoy gourmet organic scraps from Ninety Acres’ kitchen and play an integral part to the final aeration of the compost, which aids in the decomposition of organic material that is then used throughout the farm.
Poultry
Our flock on The Farm at Natirar is comprised of the following six breeds of chickens: Rhode Island Reds, Araucanas, Barred Plymouth Rocks, White Plymouth Rocks, Partridge Rocks, and Black Sex Links. These breeds represent a mixture of some of the best of the heritage breeds and newer varieties. Our chickens provide the highest quality fresh egg to our kitchen on a daily basis and the farm benefits from their natural inclination to scratch seeking insect pests that may be found in the vitamin rich grass and clover pastures where they graze. For their protection overnight, our flock is housed inside our mobile coop each evening. The mobile coop enables us to rotate the chickens to new pastures weekly, which efficiently allows access to fresh greens for the flock and distributes nutrients from their manure back to the soil.
